BC Reigns on the ice, snow and hardwood on second day of Games

Halifax, NS (February 13, 2011) - - Team BC added six medals to its total Sunday, along with several top finishes on the second day of competition at the Canada Winter Games.

Tori Spence (Kamloops) won her second bronze medal on the Canada Games Oval, this time in the 1500m event.  On the short track, Courtney Shmyr (Langley) also climbed the podium to accept a bronze medal after winning her 1500m event.

Team BC hit the slopes in beautiful sunshine at Ski Wentworth and came away with two podium finishes in men's halfpipe competition, including a history-making bronze by Hunter Visser (Penticton) who tied for 3rd with two other athletes.  It was the first time ever that three athletes have tied for a medal at a Canada Games.  The Silver was won by Max Heard (Duncan).

In team sports, the women's curling team, men's hockey, wheelchair basketball and ringette all had victories. 

Corryn Brown, Samantha Fisher, Sydney Fraser and Erin Pincott, all from Kamloops came out focused and finished with a 6-2 victory over the Northwest Territories!

Team BC's Male Hockey team secured its first victory with an 8-3 win over Nova Scotia at Halifax Metro Centre. Assistant Captain Kyle Burroughs (Langley) opened the scoring. Team Captain Curtis Lazar (Vernon), Samson Reinhart (West Vancouver), Nicolas Petan (Delta), Curtis Lazar (Vernon), Macoy Erkamps (Delta), Cole Sanford (Vernon) and Brett Harris (108 Mile Ranch) all had goals, contributing to the win.

Wheelchair basketball kicked off competition with a 61-56 win over Alberta. Down 25-31 at half time BC battled back to a victory thanks to some incredible three point shots from Deion Green (Victoria). The team got its second victory of the day against New Brunswick in a game that was close all the way.  

Team BC Ringette came out on the winning end of a hard faught game against Team Ontario. With BC in the lead 4-3, Team Ontario scored with under a minute left, taking the game to OT.  Erika Lipsett (Salmon Arm) scored the  winner!
