Hockey is Canada’s game and was developed here in the 1800s with the first official game taking place in Montreal in 1875. Hockey became an Olympic sport for men at the Summer Games in 1920 and then moved to the Winter Games in 1924. The women’s game became an Olympic sport 64 years later in 1988. Hockey is one of the fastest growing women’s games in the world, with rivalries at the international level between the powerhouses of Canada and the United States.
Team BC athletes at the Canada Games are part of the BC Hockey High Performance Program that leads to Hockey Canada`s Program to Excellece program which is designed to systematically identify, track, and train male and female hockey athletes.
Ice hockey has been a part of the Canada Games program since 1967 for males, and since 1991 for females.
