Team BC earned three medals at the Canada Winter Games on Tuesday in Prince George taking a bronze in the men’s team air pistol target shooting and two silvers – the first in the 7.5 km female biathlon, followed by silver in men’s para alpine giant slalom.
The biathlon medal went to Burns Lake’s Emily Dickson. The medal was her second of the Games, she earned a bronze in the 12.5 km biathlon event on Sunday.
Dickson, who is a hometown favourite in Prince George, where she attends the Canadian Sport School, was fast on her skis on Tuesday, excelling at the shorter sprint distance and moving a step up the podium from her result earlier in the Games.
“My race was similar to Sunday where I did well in my first time in the range in the prone position,” she explained. “My skiing was solid but I had a few issues with my standing shooting so I had to push hard and ski it off.”
Dickson’s result wouldn’t be the last silver medal of the day for the host province. North Vancouver’s Mark Robertson finished second in the men’s para alpine giant slalom race.
Robertson’s ascent to the podium was challenging. The 15-year-old skier pushed through some pain to compete in his first race of the season and came away with a silver medal.
“I’ve been out with a knee injury so that has really affected my training,” he said. “I didn’t know what to expect and it hurt a bit but some Advil and putting it in the snow settled it down.”
Brian Ng and Dakota O’Donovan earned bronze in the men’s team air pistol target shooting event. The bronze medal marked the greatest accomplishment to date for both athletes; Ng and O’Donovan have only been competing in the sport for about a year-and-a-half. They met at a training event and haven’t spent too much time together but relied on their confident approach and trusted in each other’s abilities.
“I am so happy to have competed with a partner who can shoot like Dakota,” said Ng. “He did great.”
Team BC’s men’s curlers earned a big victory over Nova Scotia, posting a score of 8-4 and are undefeated in pool play earing them a guaranteed spot in the semi finals on Thursday.
In the men’s alpine giant slalom Asher Jordan of North Vancouver finished fourth and Kasper Woolley of Squamish ended up ninth. Archer Emerie Watson finished fourth in recurve.
Team BC’s ringette team suffered two tough losses on Tuesday falling 7-6 to Saskatchewan and 11-3 against Alberta. Jennah Smailes ended up in fifth place in the 7.5 km biathlon sprint.
This evening, Team BC wheelchair basketball is taking on Saskatchewan at 7:00pm and the Gymnastics All Around Female competion gets underway at 5:30pm. Both events are being webcast at www.canadagamestv.ca.
Pin Trading Circuit
Pin trading is considered the 20th official sport here in Prince George at the Canada Winter Games – it's the sport that is fully accessible, gender and age neutral and dominates the central lobby of the Official Canada Games Merchandise Store (Commonwealth Health Centre, 1302 7th Ave.), near the downtown Games Plaza.
Krassi, the pin trader, as he likes to call himself, is no stranger to this unique sport. Getting started back in 1968 on a family trip to the Grenoble Olympic Games, Krassi began his pin trading training as a soccer player, where players often exchanged pin “badges” with each other, taking home a memento from each match. Team BC has balance and flow at the Games
Every element of Team BC gear has a story – a meaning behind the design that relates to the athletes’ voyage to the Canada Games. Designed by Lheidli T’enneh Artist, Jennifer Annais Pighin, the shirt Team BC wore in the Opening Ceremony depicts an abstract landscape design that creates balance and flow while resembling the momentum of the various sports. This was paired with a scarf with a unique design of a sockeye salmon. The salmon was chosen to represent the phenomenal journey to Prince George and the significant changes that happen throughout that journey.
The scarf has become a coveted item here in Prince George, generating a frienzy whenever there is a sighting of an unclaimed scarf – we encourage all to #sharethescarf on Twitter and Instragram if you have one to share, or find someone to share with!
