Daily Update Title
Let the Games begin

Competition started for Team BC at the 2019 Canada Winter Games yesterday.

Table tennis athletes got off to a smashing start with the female team cruising to victory over Quebec and Ontario to finish first in their pool. Fiona Nie (Surrey), Benita Zhou (Vancouver) and Patrina Hui (Burnaby) earned a bye into the semi-finals.

The men’s team earned a win over Ontario in a marathon three hour match and the exhausted team then faced Quebec, losing 3-0. Steve Wang (North Vancouver), Kenny Jiang (Burnaby) and David Lin (Richmond) finished second in their pool and received a bye into the semi-finals.

Graham Sward (Abbotsford) and Caedan Bankier (Surrey) scored for the men’s hockey team, but Manitoba came out with a 4-2 win. The team will face Saskatchewan today.

The 1500 metre men and women’s events were held on the first day of competition for long track speed skating. The accumulation of snow and severely low temperatures were a challenge for the athletes but they all remained in good spirits.

Top result for the men was Kieran Hanson (Prince George) in 11th place and for the women it was Amanda Mitchell (Fort St. John) in seventh.
