Golden start for Team BC
Team BC captured six gold medals to kick off competition at the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games Saturday, as both cycling and canoe/ kayak swept the podium Saturday.
At Snye Park, Canoe/Kayak's Alex Brent (Dewdney), Team BC flag bearer, sprinted to gold on the water, together with Seb Sorescu (Maple Ridge) silver and Matthew Kholer (Maple Ridge) bronze for a sweep in the K1 1000m. Brent finished the day with 2 gold, 1 silver; Sorescu 1 silver, 2 bronze; and canoeist Zach Morgan (Kamloops) rounded out the day with gold and bronze.
Team BC cyclists brought home five of six possible medals, including podium sweep in the women's time trial, and both silver and bronze in men's time trial.
Athletics dominated on the track on the first day of Western Canada Summer Games competition Saturday, earning six gold, six silver, and five bronze for a total of 17 medals at Timberlea Community Park. Jerome Blake blazed his way to gold in the 100 metre dash with a personal best time of 10:36, with teammate Francis Klimo collecting the bronze.
At Macdonald Island Park, Team BC Judoka took five gold and one bronze medal Saturday, with two more athletes to grapple for hardware on Sunday. Team BC's 12 gymnasts completed their final training session Saturday and look forward to the official start of competition.
On the sand, both the men's and women's beach volleyball teams won their matches, with their next games on Sunday at Snye Park.
The Team BC’s men's and women's basketball teams will each take on Saskatchewan Sunday at the Syncrude Centre, after defeating both Nunavut and Yukon respectively on Saturday.
The tennis team served up wins in every match at the Timberlea Tennis Centre. Competition continues on Sunday.
After the first day of competition, BC is in first place in the medal standings with a total of 37 medals, including 15 gold, 10 silver, and 12 bronze.

While our Medical Manager takes care of our athletes’ physical wellness, Team BC is fortunate to have a two Mental Performance Coaches here to take care of our athlete’s mental health – something equally as important to success. Carl Neinhuis and Danelle Kabush, two respected experts in this field, have provided us with some tips for athletes:

of a big game, ask for help.
2. Stick to your routines and diet.
3. Don’t try to cram for last minute success!
4. Look after yourself.
