Halifax, NS (February 25, 2011) -- Boxing took centre stage at the 2011 Canada Winter Games Friday with the Gold medal finals being the hottest ticket in town. Jessy Brown, 16, of Deroche won his bout with Quebec fighter Pascal Dion to earn Team BC's 24th Gold medal of the Games.
Jessy's furious pace in the second round was the turning point of the bout, delighting the near capacity crowd, and allowing him to back off in the final round. He won on points 11-2. “I came and did what I was supposed to do here tonight,” said a calm and collected Jessy in the dressing room after the fight. “I’m so happy right now - so glad that it’s over.”
BC's women's hockey team advanced to Saturday's fifth/sixth place placement game after a 8-2 pounding of Nova Scotia in which BC scored more goals in the game than they have in the entire tournament. They are guaranteed to improve on their 8th place finish in 2007 Games in Whitehorse.
Alpine competition at Ski Wentworth wrapped up Friday. A day earlier Broderick Thompson of Whistler clocked the fastest men's time in slalom and was able to pass the leader of the Super G race to claim Gold. “I was upset with my Super G run. I made a mistake that cost me so I knew I had to go for it in Slalom," said Thompson. "I’m excited to be a Canada Games champion. It means a lot to me."
Saturday will be a busy day for the Team BC's Table Tennis team as they have advanced to all of the matches on the schedule on their final day of competition, guaranteeing more medals for BC. Competition at the Canada Games finishes Sunday.
Team BC has brought a dedicated team of 242 athletes, 74 coaches, three National Artists and 22 mission staff to the Games in Halifax. Approximately 2,700 athletes, coaches, managers and officials have come to the Games from every province and territory in Canada.
The Canada Games is a national multi-sport Games competition that brings together the best athletes from each Canadian province and territory. The primary objective of the Games and the Games movement is national and provincial sport development of Canadian youth.
