Curling continued today in Red Deer

Team BC curlers continued their competition on Wednesday at Pidherney Curling Centre.

In the morning session, both teams squared off with Ontario in Draw 8 of the tournament. The women’s team of Gracelyn Richards (Courtenay), Keelie Duncan (Comox), Chanelle Meeres (Courtenay), and Bryn Woloshyn (Royston) couldn’t quite keep up with a strong Ontario side who got to an early 4–0 lead after three ends. Team BC didn’t give up though, and clawed back four points from Ontario before conceding in the seventh end with the score 11–4.

The team of Hayato Sato (Coquitlam), Joshua Miki (Port Coquitlam), Dawson Ballard (Surrey), and Troy Chong (Burnaby) also won their morning session matchup against Ontario. It was a statement game for Team BC against the Ontario team who went into the game undefeated. Team BC got off to an incredible start, taking three points in the first end and four points in the third end. Ontario battled back, however, with a three point fourth end. It wasn’t quite enough though, as Team BC hung on for a 9–7 victory to give Ontario their first loss at the Games.

In the evening session, both teams competed against Saskatchewan. On the women’s sheet, Team BC played a tight game with the opposition, but a three point fourth end for Saskatchewan was enough to drive them to a 5–3 defeat of Team BC. The men’s team continued their strong play, defeating Saskatchewan. A three point fifth end was the game breaker for the men, who went on to win 6–3 in seven ends.

Going into the fifth day of competition on Thursday, the Team BC women sit with a record of 2–5, while the Team BC men are 6–1. The teams will play Newfoundland and Labrador in Draw 10 at 10:00 am and New Brunswick in Draw 11 at 5:00 pm.
