Today was a challenging race day in Nakiska. A total of 43 men and 28 women Did Not Finish. These DNFs show how challenging the course was today for all of the athletes. The course was set short and there are a required number of gates, so many of them were close together causing some difficulty with the turns. Although some of the team BC athletes DNF, they showed some great speed and put it all out there on the course. The coaches were proud to see all their intensity throughout today’s race. Everyone is very excited for the Slalom race tomorrow and Team BC is poised to see some great results.
Team BC had three top-16 finishes on the female side today; with Noa Rogers (North Vancouver) coming in 13th, Sara Stiel (Mr. Currie) placing 14th, and Brynn Applegath (Kamloops) placing 16th.
In the men’s category, Team BC had five top 14 finishes today. Logan Leach (Lumby) placed 5th in the para-alpine category. He really went for it on his second run with the second fastest time in the category. David Wood (Whistler) placed 10th with two very solid runs. Matthias Shorter (Whistler) followed closely behind in 12th place, followed by Benjamin Jacoby (Kamloops) in 13th and Taylor Nellis (Burnaby) in 14th. Heming Sola (Summerland) went hard on his first run with a time of 52.86 seconds, putting him in fifth place. On his second run, he caught a turn and did not finish.
It was a long day up on the mountain. The team started with a warm up at 5:30am, left for the hill at 7am, and began racing at 9:30am. Races ended at 4:00pm today. During the men’s second run, the shadows really came over the hill causing them to get very cold up at the start gate. Despite the cold, the boys pushed through and ended the day with some great runs.
This evening, the coaches will attend a coaches’ appreciation night up here in Kananaskis. These coaches have really come together as a team and have been providing the alpine crew with sound strategy and technical advice, great leadership, and the drive to push them to give it their all. Thank you to the Team BC coaches for all their hard work!
