First training day for Alpine at the 2019 Canada Winter Games

First training day for Alpine at the 2019 Canada Winter Games

Today was a training day for all of the athletes who arrived in Kananaskis late last night. Most of these athletes have not been to this course yet and so today was a great chance to do a site inspection.

The athletes did warm up runs on the run called 'Whoop Up'. The athletes were able to then do a course inspection for the Super-G that they will be racing tomorrow. Following this, they were able to do some jump training. The jump on this course is quite small.

After the jump training, the athletes did a 'slip and tip', which means they all go down the course sideways to try and flatten it out and help prepare it for the race tomorrow.

After training, the alpine crew was able to virtually participate in the Team BC pep rally. They had a great time making noise with our Team BC drums and horns and felt the love through video from the other sports back in Red Deer.

This evening, the athletes will get a good stretch in, have a team dinner, and then rest up for tomorrow's competition.

On this year's alpine team, we have two para-athletes. One athlete, Logan Leach (Lumby) is visually impaired and skis with his guide, Caele Kassa (Vernon). They use radios as they go down the hill so that Caele can direct Logan where to go. Caele and Logan had a great day of training today. Justin Johnson (Abbotsford) is a sit-skier and flies down the mountain. Justin will compete in the Giant Slalom and Slalom events.

Next up: Monday, Feb. 25 2019 - Women's Super-G at 10:45am and Men's Super-G at 12:00pm
