Kristi is an award-winning journalist/editor with the Penticton Western News (Black Press Media) who has an extensive background in multi-sport events. Another Team BC Mission Staff rookie, Kristi brings extensive communications and games experience to this new role. We are excited to have her on the team!
Kristi was a reporter, working for the Olympic News Service, at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games and at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. She also was the promotions director for the host committee at the 2016 Penticton B.C. Winter Games — bringing her Games experience full circle as she competed in the Games as a youth (in Ringette!) She has also covered numerous triathlon events, including the 2017 Penticton ITU Multisport World Championships.
What is your real life job?
I am the editor of the Penticton Western News, a Black Press Media newspaper. (A real media mogul! We’re so lucky!)
Fast Facts about Kristi:
- Favourite colour: Blue but also Black and yellow. (couldn’t choose could ya? J)
- Favourite team: Anything Team Canada. And the Pittsburgh Penguins. (Someone chose a favourite team! Finally!)
- Favourite Food: Anything someone else makes. I am a horrible cook, I am even banned from using the slow cooker. I love a donair, must have sweet sauce, enchiladas ... ohhhh and peanut butter. (NO COOKING for Kristi!)
- Nickname: KP is used most often but also K-Patt, Grandmaster-K, Patty (for sure it is now Grandmaster K exclusively. Amazing)
- Most used Emoji: Gold star, fire (these are solid chooses)
Why did you join Team BC Mission Staff?
I joined Mission Staff because I love being involved in multi-sport events. Helping athletes achieve their goals and bringing as much awareness to them and their sport as possible puts a big smile on my face. Also, getting to tag along for the ride on the incredible high's individual athletes and teams have is pretty cool too.
Where do you spend your free time?
At the rink! I play hockey (goalie) three times a week. I also am on the board of directors for the Grindstone Award Foundation which is a charity that empowers young female hockey players to participate and improve their skill development by providing grants to players facing financial challenges. As well, I am also on the board of directors for the Penticton Peach Festival.
What Olympic sport (real or fake) would you want to win a medal in?
Air hockey. I'm the (unofficial) international air hockey champion — also undefeated at Cranium. (Challenge accepted!)
What advice do you have for Team BC athletes heading into Red Deer?
Take a breath and look around. Be present in the little and big moments while you are there to ensure you are fully experiencing the sights, sounds and emotions of the Games because it will be a blur of action. (only 16 days now until we get THERE!)
What photos are your phone right now?
Photos and videos of impromptu road trips with friends, breweries (I am a craft beer snob) and about 100 Instagram boomerangs that didn't turn out as cool as I thought they would (100% relatable – on the boomerang front… so many…)
Looking forward to working with Kristi to capture the stories and highlight the moments of the 2019 Canada Games. Kristi is team Communications - the best team I must say :) Stay tuned friends and welcome aboard Kristi! Gold star!
