Team BC prevails over host province in day one of Tennis competition
Team BC began the tennis competition with a victory over Team Manitoba in the Mixed Team Event at the Winnipeg Lawn and Tennis Club today.

The Mixed Team event sees provinces face off against each other in six matches: two men’s singles, two women’s singles, one men’s doubles, and one women’s doubles. The team winning the most matches wins; in the event of a tie, a tie-breaking mixed doubles match is played.

Entering the tournament ranked third behind Team Ontario and Team Quebec, Team BC received a bye in the round of sixteen. Team Manitoba won their morning matches against Team Northwest Territories to face Team BC in the afternoon’s Quarter Final.

Team BC prevailed in five of the six matches against the host province. Singles victories were achieved by Aaron DIEMER of Victoria (6-2, 6-3), Yasmin MANSOURI of West Vancouver (6-1, 6-1), and Jack DAVIS of Port Moody (6-3, 6-3). BC swept the doubles with wins by Stefan MITROVIC of New Westminster and Jovan SIHOTA of North Vancouver (6-3, 6-0) and Jessie GONG of Richmond and Sasha VAGRAMOV of Port Moody (6-3, 6-1). Sophia HO of Port Moody was defeated in her singles match (6-2, 6-3).

The Mixed Team Competition continues Tuesday with placing matches for teams finishing fifth and below. Team BC will face second-ranked Team Quebec in Wednesday’s Semi Final.

The individual competition includes men’s and women’s singles and doubles events. By earning a spot in the Team Semi-Final, Team BC is guaranteed at least one entry in each of the singles events. Positions in the singles event will be assigned later this week, based on Tennis Canada seedings. Qualification for the doubles events begins Tuesday afternoon.
