It was three races and three silver medals for Team BC’s Yeshi Renaerts at the University of Manitoba Stadium during week one of the 2017 Canada Summer Games . “I didn’t expect to do so well,” said Renaerts, who was born in Ethiopia. “I am pretty new to the sport and I came here to have fun and to support BC.”
Yeshi was the silver medallist in the 200-metre, 400-metre and 1500-metre wheelchair races.
“It’s a lot of positive energy,” said Renaerts shortly after receiving her third silver medal. “Since being new, I’ve learned a lot of things. Competing is a lot of fun. The whole atmosphere is good. I like it.”
She grew up in Chilliwack and now lives in Victoria.
Renaerts contributed to Team BC’s medal haul in athletics. Team BC won 28 medals in Winnipeg including 14 gold, 11 silver and three bronze. At the 2013 Canada Summer Games, Team BC won 21 medals in athletics.
