Team BC finishes preliminary round in women's soccer
Team BC had a tough finish to the preliminary round of the Canada Games soccer tournament losing 3-0 to Team Alberta Monday evening. This follows a stellar performance in their opener against Newfoundland and Labrador leaving BC 1-1-0 in pool play. They will finish 2nd behind Alberta and move on to the knockout round beginning Tuesday.

BC looked strong in the opening 20 minutes of the match controlling the majority of the play which included a beautiful free kick from Julia Grosso (Vancouver) in the 12th minute from more than 30 yards away. However, the match began to slip away when Alberta capitalized on a free kick of their own in the 33rd minute to take the lead 1-0. Alberta followed that up with a backbreaking score just before halftime on a sloppy possession from the BC defenders. Finally, Alberta put the match out of reach in the 56th on a great strike from another free kick just outside BC’s 18-yard box.

The win gives Alberta top spot in pool A and will have them playing 2nd place in pool B – yet to be determined. BC on the other hand, will be matching up against the winners of pool B in their quarterfinal Tuesday August 1st at 16:30 (Central) at Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex.
