ATHLETICS
ATHLETICS WRITE UP:
Athletics, or track and field, embodies the Olympic Motto, "Citius, Fortius, Altius", faster, stronger, higher. Maybe that is why it is one of the most popular Olympic sports, and will be the largest event at the 2009 Canada Summer Canada Games.
British Columbia has a strong presence and tradition of Athletics. Most of the success is due to a well-established club system that involves 72 clubs, 215 school clubs in the province and a membership up to 67,860. Further, BC Athletics lays the foundation for solid programs and coaching in the province.
The Team BC Program, Western Canada Summer Games and Canada Summer Games are a great stepping-stone to excellence for many BC athletes: Diane Cummins competed for Team BC in 1997 and was the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games 800m Silver Medallist; Dylan Armstrong competed for Team BC in 2001 and placed 4th Shot Put at the 2008 Olympic Games; Gary Reed also competed for Team BC in 2001 and was the Silver Medallist in 800m at the 2007 World Championships and placed 4th at the 2008 Olympic Games and Mike Mason who competed for Team BC in 2005 represented Canada at the 2008 Olympic Games in High Jump.
