Olympic and world championship medallist Ryan Cochrane (Team BC 2005 Canada Summer Games) of Victoria won the gold medal in the men’s 1,500-metre freestyle on Sunday at the New South Wales swimming championships.
Cochrane, the bronze medallist at the Beijing Games in 2008 and world silver medallist last year in Rome, dominated the race winning in 15 minutes and 19.02 seconds. Wally Eggelton of Australia was second in 15:36.74 and his compatriot Cameron Smith third in 15:45.62.
On Friday, Cochrane finished fourth in the 400 freestyle, missing a berth on the podium by only 0.17 seconds.
Canada’s other medal this weekend was earned by Alexa Komarnycky of Victoria with a bronze on Saturday in the women’s 400 freestyle. Komarnycky reached two other finals placing fourth in the 400 individual medley on Friday and fifth in the 200 IM on Sunday.
Hilary Caldwell of Surrey, B.C., was in four finals this weekend finishing sixth in the 200 backstroke, eighth in the 100 backstroke and 200 IM and 10th in the 50 backstroke.
Mackenzie Downing of Victoria was fifth in the women’s butterfly and eighth in the 100 butterfly; Stefan Hirniak of Victoria fifth in the 200 butterfly while Blake Worsley of Victoria was 10th in the both the men’s 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle.
