Wrestler Sunny Dhinsa headed for NCAA National Championship

Two Simon Fraser University wrestlers are bound for the NCAA National Championships in Birmingham, AL after Sunny Dhinsa (Team BC 2009 Canada Summer Games - Abbotsford, BC) finished second at 285-pounds and Skylor Davis (Zillah, WA) finished fourth at 125-pounds.

After receiving a bye in the first round, Dhinsa defeated Kyle Graulus of Western State Colorado University and Nick Bauman of University of Nebraska Kearney.

That earned him a place in Saturday's final but Dhinsa would have to settle for second place, as he dropped the championship match 7-1 to Grand Canyon's Tyrell Fortune.

Fortune was named the conference wrestler of the year.

Davis went 2-1 on Friday, defeating Eric Rangel of New Mexico Highlands and Connor Bolling of UNK to reach the semi-final at 125-pounds, before falling to Gerald Huff in the semi final.

He lost the third place match on Saturday to Jesse Hillhouse of Colorado State University Pueblo, but his performance will still clinch him a spot in Birmingham.

Manvir Sahota (Victoria, BC) fell just shy of a place at nationals finishing fifth at 197-pounds while Brock Lamb (Destin, FL) finished sixth at 165-pounds.

Cody Coombes (Burnaby, BC) and Alex Stemer (Vashon, WA) also competed for the Clan at the Regional Championship.

The NCAA National Championship will be held in Birmingham, AL from March 6-9.
